The Boxing Day walk is a family tradition around the world. Wherever there is a holiday and bellies are still just a bit too full of rich Christmas food, people take to countryside walks for a solution. A brisk stroll in the fresh (and sometimes chilly) air soon does the trick.
While most of us opt for a familiar park for our Boxing Day wander, there is no reason not to go a little further afield and try somewhere new. It’s a bank holiday, after all. Here are a few of our top picks to try out this year:
-Cosmeston Lakes Country Park. There are nice even paths and plenty of them. You can take a good long walk to work off that roast dinner. Bring along your stale crackers and old bread as a late Christmas present for the ducks and swans, and enjoy the peace and quiet, the waterside, and free car parking.
-Parc Taf Bargoed. Equally good for walking and gentle biking, Parc Taf Bargoed is a Green Flag park nestled in the Valleys near Trelewis. Even if there is no snow at ground level you might be able to see it on the high hills above.
-Twmbarlwm. A Christmas pilgrimage to the summit of Twmbarlwm is very old tradition indeed, and one that is still relived by local people from time to time. It makes a perfect Boxing Day outing, especially if you don’t cheat and use the carpark high on the hillside summit. It’s much better to make your way up through Cwmcarn Forest or along the Ridgeway Walk. The 360 degree views from the top are well worth it.
-Cwm George Woods. The ancient woodlands around Dinas Powys have been occupied for thousands of years. The remains of Dinas Powys Castle can be glimpsed through the trees in winter, and it’s also easier to make out the much earlier earthworks that crown the hill.
-Beechwood Park. It’s not just for Newport. Beechwood Park is a South Wales gem. With about 30 acres of landscaped parkland to wander through, it’s well worth making a journey to get there.
-The Garth. The Garth (or Garth Hill) can be reached by foot from Taff’s Well or Pentyrch, and it commands wonderful views of the River Taff, Cardiff, and the Channel.
