There is one factor that separates a really memorable garden from one that is merely pretty to look at and well cared for. That factor is romance, and Dewstow Gardens has far more than its fair share of it. Who could resist a tale of long-lost and buried garden grottoes, now restored to their full magical splendour?
Dewstow’s story captures the imagination of young and old alike. It spans more than a century and takes in the grand plans of Victorian garden designers, the tumultuous years of the Second World War, and the a whole lot of hard work over the last decade. The story has the best kind of happy ending and those that laboured to restore Dewstow Grottoes to their former splendour have been richly rewarded- the gardens are now just as beautiful and charming as they were first intended to be.
Visitors can stroll through underground grottoes and passages, pass by musical streams tumbling down the rocks and skirt around sunlit ponds on the surface. There are ferny nooks, colourful flowers, and perfectly picturesque waterlilies. It’s a garden experience unlike any other and a walk through Dewstow is an experience to remember for years to come.
At 8 acres, it’s one of the smaller open gardens in South Wales but there is so much to see within that area- be sure to allow plenty of time to appreciate each feature. Dewstow Gardens makes a wonderful day out for the whole family, from grandparents to small children. It’s equally enchanting for anyone with a little imagination.
